Geraldton is a great stopover for all backpackers who are making their way along the Western Australian coastline because the beautiful seaside destination has so much to offer for backpackers who are always in search of fun and excitement. Also known as “Sun City”, Geraldton has it all of from an aquatic playground, a charming countryside to explore, National Parks that surround it and many things to see and do within the town itself. Once you check into your chosen accommodation you can have the chance to experience all that Geraldton serves up.
There are some great backpacker hostels that you can book into for as long as you wish, that will provide clean and very comfortable dorm rooms, twin rooms and double rooms for next to nothing. Along with great accommodation that staff are really friendly, the onsite facilities are excellent and the nightly fun always begins on sundown. Where ever you do decide to stay you can be within walking distance to the array of shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries, museums, bars, pubs and buzzing nightspots that you can take advantage of. The marina precinct is always a great place to visit which is a great mixture of al fresco dining, cafes, bars and boutiques all fringing the marina boardwalk.
From the marina you can also come on board a range of tours that depart daily for the open waters where you can go whale watching between the months of July and October, take a fishing charter for the day, go scuba diving or snorkelling around the neighbouring islands or just kick back on a luxury sailing vessel and go island hopping, swimming and sunbaking. The Mediterranean weather is the perfect setting for all things outdoors and there are just so many things to entice you. You can go surfing on the local breaks or join in on one of the surfing lessons so you can learn or perhaps take up kite boarding, wind surfing or simply swimming in the warm ocean waters. Geraldton prides itself on its pristine waters and sun kissed beaches so you will not find it hard to spend most of your time upon them.
There are some great things in and around Geraldton to see and do, such as historic museums, monuments, weekend markets and entertainment. You can take a walk along Greenough River Nature Trail or one of the many other hiking tracks, do the walk to Point Moore Lighthouse or perhaps one of the other lookouts that will provide stunning views and vantage points, go reef walking or dive the Batavia Shipwreck that lies just off shore. The Abrolhos Island are one of the main drawcards for Geraldton boasting some of Australia finest dive sites for you to enjoy. This area is teeming with sea life, marine life and bird life that you can get up close to with a range of great tours that leave every day.
Perhaps you might like to take a trip to Kalbarri National Park for the day or take a dip in the Ellendale pool where you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the sun with friends or cruise the Murchison River and travel through gorges and see breathtaking scenery along the way. With its natural beauty, excellent hostel accommodation, endless attractions both on water and on land, activities galore, dining and nightspots that you can frequent, Geraldton is one of the best places a backpacker can visit. It is a coastal town that is perfect situated so you can easily access so many of the central coasts attractions all from here. Some backpackers only plan to come to Geraldton for a couple of nights but always arrange to stay longer, because when you arrive you will realise that there is just so much to see and do, that a couple of days just isn’t enough to experience it all in!
