What to expect

You'll board a light aircraft from Kalgoorlie airstrip with one or two other passengers. The flight heads north and east over the city and its industrial core—the Super Pit is a staggering sight from the air, a yawning chasm of exposed earth and machinery. After surveying the smelter and surrounding towns, the aircraft turns south toward Kambalda and the salt lake. Lake Lefroy is arrestingly empty and dry, a pale expanse broken only by the geometric gouges of mining operations. The entire experience lasts an hour, including takeoff and landing.
