What to expect

You'll depart early and begin with a reef snorkel to acclimatise to conditions and warm up. Next comes the main event: boarding a spotter plane to scan the ocean for whale shark fins, then returning to the water for close snorkelling when one is spotted. The sharks are curious but docile filter-feeders, though always unpredictable. Between encounters, you'll drift over coral gardens observing smaller reef fish and invertebrates. The marine biologists answer questions and point out ecological details. Expect the day to be physically demanding—surface intervals between dives are brief, and ocean swells can be substantial. Bring seasickness medication if prone.

Moderate fitness required; this isn't leisurely snorkelling. You'll need to be a confident, competent swimmer comfortable in deeper open water.
